Medarda Hoffmann

Medarda passed away on September 21, 2025. Her vigil will take place on Sunday, September 28 at 7 pm at St. Francis of Assisi. Her funeral mass will be held on Monday, September 29 at 11:30 am also at St. Francis of Assisi.

Medarda Emeline Aslin Hoffmann, 79, of San Antonio, Texas, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, September 21, 2025. She passed away peacefully in her sleep, embraced by the love she gave so freely throughout her life.

Medarda was born on October 7, 1945, in Duluth, Minnesota, to Wynard and Emeline Aslin, and grew up in Columbia, Missouri. She developed her lifelong love of music and dancing at a young age —passions that would become hallmarks of her vibrant personality.

Medarda attended Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, when she met the love of her life, Declan Hoffmann. They married in Columbia, Missouri in 1966 and began a beautiful journey together that spanned nearly six decades. Together, they raised five children—Sean, Douglas, Elizabeth, Laura, and Michael—fulfilling Medarda’s cherished dream of being a devoted stay-at-home mother.

Declan’s career as an FBI agent took the family across the country, with stops in Seattle, Los Angeles, and Chicago, before settling in San Antonio, Texas, in 1980. There, they became founding members of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, where Medarda served faithfully for over 45 years, teaching CCD, serving as a Eucharistic minister, and nurturing her deep spiritual life.

While raising a bustling household, Medarda earned her degree in Religious Studies from the University of the Incarnate Word and worked part-time—an inspiring testament to her determination, faith, and love for learning. She also shared her passion for wellness by teaching women’s fitness classes, always encouraging others to care for their bodies and spirits.

Medarda’s greatest joy came from her family. She was a constant presence in her grandchildren’s lives, never missing a school play, soccer game, or summer adventure. Known affectionately as “Meme,” she created magical memories through her holiday decorations, lovingly prepared meals, and handcrafted gifts. Her home was always filled with laughter, warmth, and the delicious aroma of her cooking.

She is survived by her beloved husband, Declan, and their children: Sean (Carolyn) Hoffmann, Douglas Hoffmann, Elizabeth (Drew) Sandidge, Laura Hoffmann, and Michael (Yasmin) Hoffmann. She also leaves behind six grandchildren—Natalie (Caleb), Matthew, Christian, Harper, Ronan, and Risa—her pride and joy. Medarda is also survived by her brothers, Larry Aslin and Ray (Cathy) Aslin, and many cherished in-laws, nieces, and nephews.

Medarda was a radiant soul whose love for Jesus shone through her kindness, generosity, and unwavering belief in the goodness of others. Her joyous spirit, infectious laughter, and boundless energy touched everyone she met. She was truly larger than life—a woman of deep faith, fierce love, and unforgettable grace.

Her vigil will take place on Sunday, Sept. 28 at 7 p.m., and a funeral mass will be held on Monday, Sept. 29 at 11:30 a.m., both at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church.

The family would like to thank all the friends and parishioners who have offered support and prayers during this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or your favorite charity.

“Jesus said to her, ‘I am the resurrection and the life. The one who believes in me will live, even though they die; and whoever lives by believing in me will never die.’” John 11:25-26
