Rolando V. Ramon, 78, passed away peacefully on August 24, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. Born on April 8, 1947, in Del Rio, Texas, Rolando was proud to call Del Rio home for his entire life. From his earliest years, he carried a natural curiosity about the world and a remarkable gift for making the complex understandable. His love of learning and teaching shaped his life and touched thousands of others.
Rolando devoted more than five decades to the field of education. He taught ninth grade biology at San Felipe High School and later at the 9th Grade Campus with San Felipe Del Rio CISD, retiring from the district in 2004. Even in retirement, his commitment to students never ended, as he continued teaching through the district’s At Home School Program, extending his influence to yet another generation. Alongside his work in the classroom, Rolando also served as a driver’s education instructor for three decades, first with the district and later through his own independent driving school. He was known for his patience, warmth, and ability to guide students not only through rules and lessons but also through the challenges of growing up. Generations remember him not just as a teacher, but as a mentor, a confidant, and a steady source of encouragement. Rolando’s classroom door was always open, just as his heart was always welcoming. He believed every student deserved a chance and every person a voice. His warm smile and genuine care left an indelible mark on all who knew him, and he lived by his favorite saying: “Knowledge is a gift you give yourself.” He embodied that truth every day, giving the gift of knowledge and kindness freely to all who crossed his path.
Outside of education, Rolando was an avid outdoorsman who found joy and peace in hunting and fishing. The quiet of nature and the patience of the hunt mirrored his own steady character, and those pursuits gave him balance and fulfillment beyond the classroom.
Rolando often said his greatest achievement was not found in lesson plans or labs, but in the family he raised and the pride he felt in each of his children. He is survived by his devoted wife of 55 years, Yolanda L. Ramon, and their children: Rosella Ramon (54) and her children, Willard N. R. Jenkins, Lee M. Jenkins, and Destiny R. Jenkins; Rolando Ramon Jr. (53) and wife, Claudia Ramon, and their children, Rolando Valentin Ramon, Cristina Alma Ramon, and Ricardo Moises Ramon; Romeo Ramon (51) and wife, Holly Ramon, and their children, Molly Noelle Ramon, Kathryn Olivia Ramon, and Nicolas Romeo Ramon; Roel Ramon (49) and his children, Alexander Edwin Nelson Martinez and wife, Ericka Rhea Lopez, Christopher Timothy Aurelius, Jonathan Justin Dean Lee, Zelina Jillian Hida Lee (and daughter, Adilee Hida Leslie Hunt), and Noeh Cristian Aparicio Ramon; Reynaldo Ramon (46) and wife, Joanna B. White Ramon, and their children, Caleb Elwood White, Eloise Ann Ramon, and Lucia Wills Ramon; and Rene Ramon (41) and husband, Thomas Patrick Ramon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Simon V. Ramon and Ventura Ramon, and his brother, Raul Ramon. He is survived by his siblings: Simon R. Ramon and wife, Janie Ramon; Romelia Limones and husband, Manuel Limones; Ramiro Ramon and wife, Sonia Ramon; and Sandra Salinas. He is also lovingly remembered by numerous nieces and nephews.
