We Welcome Dcn. Scott & Diane Sowell!

Dcn. Scott and Diane have been married 40 years. They have lived in San Antonio since 1997, and have four children and two grandchildren. Scott is the oldest of four siblings born and raised in Cincinnati, Ohio; and Diane is the oldest of three siblings born in Washington, DC, and raised in Maryland, Virginia, Pennsylvania, and Georgia. Deacon Scott and Diane met while on Active Duty in the US Air Force, and have lived in Florida, Germany, Colorado, and Texas. They were part of St. Mary’s Parish downtown San Antonio for almost 21 years when they were assigned to St. Matthew Parish at Ordination to the Permanent Diaconate in 2018. In June of 2026 Dcn. Scott and Diane were reassigned to St. Francis of Assisi Parish. Upon graduation from the University of Notre Dame, Scott served 20 years in the US Air Force, 18 of which were spent flying fighter aircraft or teaching others to do so. After retiring from the US Air Force Scott has taught high school math and coached the Varsity Soccer Team at Holy Cross HS, taught academics to Royal Saudi Air Force F-15 pilots in Saudi Arabia, and served as an Aviation Safety Official for the Boeing Company at Kelly Field for 21 years and 7 months before retiring in March of 2026. After attending the University of Georgia and graduating from Georgia State University, Diane was the Director of a wilderness challenge program which provided intervention for at-risk youth. Upon entering the US Air Force on Active Duty, Diane served 4 years as a Weapons Controller with units located in Florida, Oklahoma, and Germany, completed the USAF Survival School Training, and earned flights in the backseat of an USAF T-33 and F-15. Along with raising their 4 children, Diane has an MBA, worked in corporate sales and college recruiting for many years, has volunteered in the area of Family Violence and with women at risk, has served in a variety of Parish roles including Music Director, RCIA Director, Family Life & Marriage Director, and Annulment Coordinator. While assigned to St. Matthew, Dcn. Scott and Diane developed a comprehensive & effective Marriage Formation Program which included enrichment programs for married couples & families, taught Baptism Classes, started and led the St. Matthew Charismatic Prayer Group, helped lead the St. Matthew Parish Respect Life Ministry, and trained, recruited and scheduled Altar Servers. They are also members of the Catholic Charismatic Renewal, serve in healing ministry, and minister to families at Funeral Vigils and Baptisms. Both Scott and Diane have Master’s Degrees from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. Currently, Dcn. Scott and Diane serve on the Board of Allied Women’s Center. Scott and Diane are truly appreciative of the warm welcome they have received from the St Francis of Assisi Parish family, and look forward to meeting more of you and serving with you as part of the St. Francis community.
