In the United States Conference of Catholic Bishop’s (USCCB), Forming Consciences for Faithful Citizenship, we are called to participate in political life, and we have another opportunity to do so as faithful citizens by voting in the upcoming election. "As a nation, we share many blessings and strengths, including a tradition of religious freedom and political participation. People in every nation enhance the social dimension of their lives by acting as committed and responsible citizens" (Evangelii Gaudium, no. 220) Guided by the four basic principles of Catholic social doctrine: the dignity of the human person, the common good, subsidiarity, and solidarity (Compendium of the Social Doctrine of the Church, no. 160), Catholics are better able to evaluate policy positions, party platforms, and candidates' promises and actions in light of the Gospel and the moral and social teaching of the Church in order to help build a better world. We are encouraged to educate ourselves as voters on the issues, positions, and the teaches of our faith as we exercise this privilege to vote in elections that will shape the community in which we live.
